Norwegian royals to attend international AIDS conference

Oslo - Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, are slated to attend an international AIDS conference in Canada next month, the royal palace said Thursday. The royals are to visit Toronto when the city hosts the 16th international conference on HIV/AIDS. The 32-year-old crown princess recently became a special representative for the United Nations AIDS agency, UNAIDS, and in April visited UNAIDS headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Her interest in the struggle against the pandemic was generated during her 2002 studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and a visit to Malawi in January 2005. Other dignitaries scheduled to attend the August 13-18 conference include former Irish President Mary Robinson, former US president Bill Clinton, actor Richard Gere as well as Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates and his wife Melinda. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
