Britain's Queen Elizabeth II unveils memorial for late mother
Jul 7, 2006, 16:46 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is to unveil a memorial to her late mother in Scotland today (07.07.06).
The monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, will visit the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens to open the new Queen Mother Memorial Garden.
The living tribute to the late monarch cost over £500,000 and includes a bronze portrait of Elizabeth I, housed in a stone pavilion. It has taken two years of collaboration between the Queen Mother Memorial Fund and the botanical gardens to create the site. According to the BBC, the pavilion walls are lined with shells, collected by children from all around the country, and the ceiling is decorated with pine cones from the National parks of Scotland. The memorial also boasts a Celtic maze, which is surrounded by four 'secret' gardens. Each of the gardens contains the late monarch's favourite flowers including the Queen Elizabeth rose. David Bowes-Lyon, the Chairman of the fund, was quoted in The Scotsman newspaper as saying: 'There will be a generation of children who didn't know the Queen Mother so this garden will teach them about her life and her work helping others. 'That would be the main message for the future - we want to demonstrate the qualities that she had, giving freely of her time in the service of others, and to encourage people to help others.'opyright 2006 BANG Media International
