Prince William's football walkabout
May 30, 2006, 15:19 GMT
Britain's Prince William will mingle with England football fans before the first World Cup match.
According to www.royalist.co.uk, the 23-year-old royal - who is the President of the Football Association (FA) - is planning a walkabout outside Frankfurt's stadium ahead of England's game against Paraguay on June 10 (06).
While previous World Cup events have suffered from violent clashes between rival supporters, officials are not worried about William meeting fans. A source said: 'We do not consider this to be a great security risk because the kinds of fans who wait for the team coach are not the sort to be hooligans. 'Even so, no chances are being taken. There will be a heavy security presence.' The prince - who is second in line to the British throne - will also be accompanied by personal royal detectives and bodyguards. William originally wanted to meet the England stars before the crucial match, but his request was denied because officials feared it could distract the players. The football-mad prince took over the FA presidency from his uncle Prince Andrew last October. His first official role was presenting the FA Cup to Liverpool football team at the Millennium Stadium in Wales. William is set to meet fans just before the England team coach arrives at the stadium.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
