Prince Charles' 'model village' outrage
May 25, 2006, 15:20 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles' 'model village' has been attacked by a local mayor.
The new Mayor of Dorchester, Robin Potter, has said that Poundbury - created by the prince after he criticised modern architecture - was no longer living up to the original dream of creating an inclusive and sustainable community.
Mr Potter told BBC news on Tuesday (23.05.06): 'Phase One was very sensitively designed with regard to the original master plan by Leon Krier. 'Phase Two doesn't seem to have followed some of his concepts quite so closely about making Poundbury a very pleasant place to live with mixtures of small and large houses.' 'It seems that, whether because of their siting, as the development moves up the hill the big buildings dominate, which is a shame.' Mr Potter suggested that the whole impact of the village, very visible from nearby Maiden Castle, needed to be carefully re-considered. A spokesman for the Duchy of Cornwall insisted the prince's office had always made a point of consulting the locals through their residents' association.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
