Charles sparks medicine debate
May 24, 2006, 12:42 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles has sparked a national debate after making a public plea for alternative medicine to be used alongside modern treatments.
The Prince of Wales said patients suffering from chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes, ought to seek 'the best of both worlds' in his keynote speech at the annual meeting of the World Health Organisation in Geneva yesterday (23.04.05).
He went on to express his support for ancient cures such as herbal remedies and acupuncture. In response, 13 British doctors and scientists issued an open letter just hours later urging the National Health Service to stop funding complementary therapies such as homeopathy and reflexology. The prince referred to studies that revealed alternative therapies to be successful - for example the use of St John's Wort for treating mild depression. He said: 'I say that a mix of modern and traditional remedies that emphasises the participation of the patient can create a powerful healing force.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
