May 12, 2006, 16:09 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles visited a monastic sanctuary in Greece yesterday (11.05.06).
According to Associated Press the royal flew in especially to visit the 1,000-year-old monastic community of Mount Athos in northern Greece.
The heir to the British throne landed at an airport about 170 kilometers from the northern city of Thessaloniki, accompanied by his guards. A private yacht took the important guest to the sanctuary, which is a valued site for Orthodox Christianity - and is only open to male visitors. The prince - who has visited the community before - is reported to be staying at the Vatopedi Monastery. Charles, as well as his father, Prince Philip, is a member of the 'Friends of Mount Athos', which is a society supporting the community. Mount Athos, which has been an autonomous state since the Byzantine times, has a total of 20 monasteries.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
