Britain's memorial design
May 10, 2006, 16:13 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has shortlisted five designers to create a memorial for the late Queen Mother.
The five teams of prominent architects - who are based in different parts of the United Kingdom - are all said to have a wide-ranging experience of high profile commissions.
According to Britain's official royal website - royal.gov.uk - their proposals are all taking different approaches to the project. The selected designers will now prepare costed prototypes of the memorial for submission next month. The examples then will be passed to a special selection panel and Prince Charles in September. The selected site for the memorial is near The Mall in London, England. A statue of King George VI was created on the site in 1955, and the plans are to modify the existing location to include a memorial for The Queen Mother. Meanwhile, last month (04.06) a special £5 coin was produced by The Royal Mint to celebrate Elizabeth II's 80th birthday. The coin is now also being sold to help raise the funds for the memorial.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
