Queen's sea birthday wish
Apr 21, 2006, 14:12 GMT
Hundreds of sailors congratulated Britain's Queen Elizabeth on her birthday today (21.04.06) by spelling out a spectacular message for her.
Five hundred sailors spent three hours in sweltering heat, aboard an aircraft carrier, lining up their bodies to spell 'Happy 80th' for their royal commander.
The spectacular display, which was photographed from a helicopter in the Red Sea yesterday (20.04.06), took three long hours to coordinate, but the 22,000-ton flagship's commanding officer insisted the sailors were happy to participate - despite it being their day off. Capt Bob Cooling was quoted in Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying: 'Having hosted the queen on board in Malta recently, the Ship's Company wanted to send a personal message of congratulation. 'We'd just left the Suez Canal and it was their initiative to use one of our few rest days to mark the occasion.' Meanwhile, the monarch was said to be 'beaming' as she began opening some of the 20,000 birthday cards sent to her from well-wishers at Buckingham Palace this morning. The queen thanked everyone who had sent their best wishes, saying in a statement: 'I have been very touched by what you have written and would like to express my gratitude.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
