Queen's birthday 'twins'
Apr 20, 2006, 15:19 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II began her 80th celebrations by throwing a party for 99 people who share her birthday.
The guests were invited to lunch because they were born on 21 April 1926, the same day as the monarch.
The 70 women and 29 men were selected by a ballot in January. Each guest was allowed to bring one companion along to enjoy the three course meal, which included boeuf bordelaise and mille-feuille au citron. The monarch immediately put her guests at ease by thanking them for coming and referring to them as her 'twins'. She is quoted by Reuters as saying: 'Thank you for coming today and I hope all those of you who are my exact twins will make the most of our special day on Friday. 'I doubt whether any of us would say the last 80 years have been plain sailing, but we can give thanks for our health and happiness.' British Prime Minister Tony Blair led the birthday tributes in parliament. He said: 'Throughout, as part of the royal family and as the queen, she has been a reassuring and unifying presence for her people.' The queen, who turns 80 on Friday, will celebrate with a walkabout outside Windsor Castle. Her son Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, is also hosting a private family dinner for her.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
