Princess Anne joins farewell march
Apr 20, 2006, 15:19 GMT
Britain's Princess Anne is set to attend a Royal Army parade marking the end of the country's oldest regiment.
The emotional parade - which will be held in Edinburgh next month - will see existing soldiers marching with veterans to mark the end of the Royal Scots regiment, which dates back 373 years.
The Royal Scots have been merged with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. They will form a new battalion of the new Royal Regiment of Scotland.princess Anne, who is also the Colonel in Chief of the regiment, will watch the spectacular parade from the steps of the Royal Scottish Academy.
She will be saluted by the hundreds of soldiers joining in the farewell march. Many soldiers serving in the Royal Scots are currently fighting in Iraq and will arrive home just days before the event. Former royal Scots Lieutenant Colonel Bob Paterson is quoted on The Scotsman website as saying: 'It will be a memorable day. I think it is an appropriate thing to do and we would have done something earlier if the battalion had not been in Iraq. I think people will feel quite sad.' He added: 'The fact that Princess Anne wants to come as the Colonel in Chief and take the salute gives you an indication of how strongly people feel about it.' After the procession Royal Scots representatives will attend a special reception at the Royal Sports Club, where they will have the opportunity to meet the Princess Royal.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
