Princess Anne's Devon trip
Apr 12, 2006, 16:53 GMT
Britain's Princess Royal officially opened a £2.6 million overnight stay unit at a hospice in the south of England this week.
Princess Anne looked elegant in a tweed suit as she arrived at the North Devon Hospice in Barnstaple, which until now has only been able to provide day care for patients.
The state-of-the-art facility will now allow nurses to give 24-hour care for those in need.
President of the hospice and local dignitary, the Countess of Arran, is quoted on website ThisIsDevon.co.uk as saying: 'This is the long-awaited moment for the hospice. Our bedded unit development has taken years of planning, fundraising and then building.
'Her Royal Highness's visit is the perfect culmination of many years of hard work by so many people. It is also a fitting tribute to the people of North Devon who have generously understood that providing 24-hour hospice care to those most in need in our community is not a luxury, but a necessity.' The opening was the first of a number of events Princess Anne attended in the county throughout the day. She also visited the Calvert Trust Centre in Exmoor - an organisation which arranges holidays for disabled people - to celebrate its tenth anniversary and a new outdoor riding arena. The princess's tour of Devon also saw her attend the launch of the Exmoor National Park management plan and a visit to the Exmoor village of Molland, where she met members of the farming community. Later in the day, the royal stopped off at the Middlemoor Police headquarters, Exeter, to open the new combined air operations building for the Devon and Cornwall Police and the Devon Air Ambulance.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
