Princess Royal welcomes new British citizens
Apr 7, 2006, 16:33 GMT
Britain's Princess Royal was in Bradford yesterday to welcome the latest British citizens as they swore their allegiance to the Queen Elizabeth II during a special ceremony.
Princess Anne congratulated 15 immigrants as they received British citizenship at City Hall.
The immigrants - from South Africa, Malaysia, Nigeria, Philippines, Pakistan, India and Syria - said their pledges, sang the national anthem and were awarded certificates to mark their loyalty by the Princess. Anne thanked the new citizens for their economic contribution, industry, skills and voluntary efforts. She is quoted in Bradford's Telegraph and Argus as saying: 'Your decision to apply for citizenship is a vote of confidence in this country that all of us can appreciate and celebrate. 'The UK is a complicated arrangement of islands and nations and its history and culture has been outward looking. People have travelled to all parts of the globe. Those connections have brought back many people here who have set up their homes and made a difference to these islands. 'Today is special because you are adding to that mix and the talents that have been brought here.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
