No to 'Queen' Camilla

Apr 6, 2006, 13:36 GMT

The British public have said no to Camilla becoming queen - and only 37 per cent want Prince Charles to become King.

Just one in five people think the Duchess of Cornwall - who married the prince last April - should one day reign as queen.

And almost two-thirds have no interest in the royal marriage, according to an online poll.

Opposition to Camilla is strongest among women, who are more sympathetic to the late princess Diana and disapproving towards Prince Charles' adultery.

Many blame Camilla for the break-up of Charles' first marriage and only 18 per cent would support her becoming queen.

The findings of the Populus poll will come as a huge disappointment to the royal family, who hoped the marriage of Prince Charles to Camilla would produce the usual royal wedding optimism.

The results have shown what an uphill struggle the royals face in turning around public opinion on the monarchy.

Alan Berry, co-founder of the Diana Circle - which aims to preserve the Princess's memory, summed up the group's feelings. He said: 'Why does it come as a surprise to anyone that the unpopular couple appear thoroughly content in each other's company and so happy, compared with the frostiness of his last visit with Diana?

'Would Camilla have looked so pleased with herself if Charles was having a long-term affair with another woman behind her back?'

What I see is that if Camilla had backed off and told Prince Charles to go home and work on his VERY IMPORTANT marriage then maybe Diana would still be alive. It seems that Camilla was pleased as punch when she realized that Prince Charles was having marital problems which shows her to be the selfish woman she is. Since she worked so hard to help bust up Diana's marriage, then she should just stop whining and face the music. She is never going to be loved by the masses and that's the reality. And she should 'never' go anywhere without armed bodyguards!

Sadly, I agree as well. They should never expect any admiration from the public, especially when Princess Diana died. She can’t compete with a dead woman, especially not one she hurt so badly in life.

My concern is what this means for the monarchy. There was an article in 2005 that talked about the possible dissolving of all world monarchies. He is not King David, or any other great king for that matter, and she is definitely not an esteemed virgin. It been almost 10years after Princess Diana’s death, they have gotten married, and people still do not like them. Some battles just cannot be won.

God help us all if the plonker ever becomes King . He famously once expressed a wish to be 'Camillas Tampon' .As the next Supreme Governer of the Church of England, there might be a conflict of interest.

I do not agree with any of the letters I have seen. Prince Charles lived a life that (even with the wealth) must have been suffocating. Every move being dictated to you. He married the woman that was chosen for him, but not the one he truly loved. I do believe that he tried to make Diana happy, but if you are all honest, then you know she was a whining, demanding, and not faithful herself, woman. Diana did a lot of good things but only when it pleased her to do so. How many of you were brought up in a home with all the wealth & privelige that Diana had? SHe was probably indeed, a spoiled brat that had to have her own way. However, she did give birth to the two princes and she certainly did a good job at raising them. I am very sure that she lavished her sons with love. That is what she should get credit for. As for Camilla, HRH The duchess of cornwall;; She did stay in the background for years. I am sure that some of you reading this, must remember your first true love. Of course we all married someone else and for better of for worse, we stuck with it. I do not believe that two people, who waited thirty years, and seem to truly love each other, should bend to public pressures. They make each other happy, Camilla will stand by her man, and therefore he will be a really good King.

When are all you thickies going to realise that Camilla will NEVER REIGN AS QUEEN? The consort of a king is generally styled 'queen' but as such is a queen consort, NOT a queen regnant, with no official standing in the constitutional monarchy. Charles will make a fine king, and Camilla will make a fine consort, ie supporter, no matter what her title is.

It is so funny how the admirers of Dianna seem to forget the affairs that she had. She was not an innocent party in all of this and just to emphasise the situation Charles had only 1 affair.
During all of these troubled times Camilla never once spoke out to wash dirty laundry in public and in this and her present role has shown that she is a woman who can not only rise to an occasion but has the diplomatic resolve to work through any situation.
The Dianna everyone so fondly remembers was a very good actress who behind the scenes was a different woman indeed. She was also the woman who was willing to compromise our monachy by marrying a muslim...and I am not talking Dody here.
Shame some people can't see the wood for the trees....

Well, I am not a fan of either of them. I think William is the best choice to be King. Charles doesn't deserve to take the Throne.

Smithy it dosn't matter what you say...Camilla still will be CALLED Queen worldwide.
Remember the Burrell Trial fiasco?.Prince charles cost the taxpayers £2.5M. only to see his 'butler' MICHAEL FAWCETT (alias 'Fawcett the Fence')resign. He immediatly rehired him .Thanks to Charles ,Michael Fawcett is now a millioniare ,a true rags-to-riches story.(I suggest you look further into this)....
Its about time we brought in a Republic and elected our Monarchy ...theres got to be something better than this dysfunctional bunch of halfwits.

From: Mount Olympus is for the gods

What are the odd it will be replace by a Republic that elects its Monarch? Has anyone done a poll on that? I mean with those statistics mentioned above I am surprised no one has asked that question.

Sorry, I am American. You know how we love our revolutions, not to mention conquests in the name of republican views and democracy.
