Prince Edward speaks out for queen
Mar 20, 2006, 16:23 GMT
Britain's Prince Edward has publicly spoken out over whether Queen Elizabeth II should continue as head of state in Australia.
The queen ended her tour of the country amid fierce debate over the monarchy's future there.
Edward, 42, is the first royal to publicly speak on the subject. Asked about the surge in republicanism in an Australian TV interview he said: 'No, no, no. That is just that lot who are trying to stir up something. I think most Australians will just rise above it.' The 79-year-old queen received a warm welcome during her recent visit to the country. But the general goodwill was dogged by undercurrents of dissention from republicans. It was recently revealed the Australian national anthem was going to replace Britain's 'God Save the Queen' at the opening of the games. But Prime Minister John Howard moved quickly to have the decision overturned, saying it showed 'a lack of respect and good manners'.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
