Three in five Australians want rid of Queen
Mar 15, 2006, 14:50 GMT
Almost three-in-five Australians want their nation to abandon ties with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and become a republic.
A weekend poll, answered by nearly 150,000 people, found 57 percent in favour of Australia cutting constitutional ties to Great Britain.
This latest push for an Australian republic comes during a visit from the queen, who is in the country for the Commonwealth Games. Speaking on the Nine Network's 'Today' programme, Allison Henry, of the Australian Republican Movement, said Australia's head of state should reflect the nation's values. She said: 'I think it's important to change so that we have an Australian head of state. 'A head of state who personifies Australia, who can reflect Australia and its values, and represent Australia, and only Australia, both at home and overseas.' But the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy's Professor David Flint said there was no reason to change Australia's association with the queen. He said: 'The crown is at the centre of the constitution. 'We have a remarkable constitution, which is the envy of the world. Why change it?'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
