Prince Edward's $4000-per-night hotel
Mar 13, 2006, 12:59 GMT
Britain's Prince Edward will stay in a lavish $4000-per-night hotel room during the Commonwealth Games - whilst the queen and Prince Philip will make do with a room at Government House.
Edward - who has a long list of Games commitments - will be the first guest in the newly refurbished Royal Suite in Melbourne's Sofitel hotel.
The plush 50th floor suite, which has already been inspected by Buckingham Palace officials, comes with a butler service, plasma TVs, an original Brett Whiteley artwork and stunning views of the city. There is also a dining area for eight and adjoining rooms to accommodate an entourage. Sofitel General Manager Clive Scott said: 'It's quite luxurious but it's not over the top - you could say it's understated elegance.' To make sure the prince can catch all the sports action up close, there's also a special TV in the bathroom designed to not fog up. The suite would cost up to $4000 per night during peak times after the Games. The room revamp is part of a $23 million refurbishment of the Collins St hotel. Other suites on the Sofitel's exclusive 50th floor have recently played host to Priscilla Presley and Jane Fonda.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
