Queen Mother memorial concert
Mar 9, 2006, 17:50 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles and wife Camilla are to listen to a performance of a cello concerto composed in memory of the Queen Mother.
Charles asked for the piece to be commissioned in honour of his beloved grandmother, who died in 2002.
'Reflections On A Scottish Folk Song' was written by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett for cello and strings, and will be performed for the first time in public by the Philharmonia Orchestra. The concert, which marks Sir Richard's 70th birthday, is taking place in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in central London. It is based on the traditional Scottish folk song Ca' the Yowes (Call the Ewes). The queen mother was descended from the Royal House of Scotland and retained strong associations with the country. A spokeswoman for the Peter Moores Foundation, which helped with the commission, said: 'There was a private hearing for the Prince of Wales held a while ago. The piece has lots of references to Scottish folk music.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
