Bear to follow Charles
Mar 7, 2006, 16:55 GMT
An animal rights activist plans to dress as a bear and follow Britain's Prince Charles on all his public engagements - until faux fur is used for the Buckingham Palace Guards' bearskin hats.
Animal rights group PETA want the prince to convince Queen Elizabeth to stop using real fur for the ceremonial hats.
The PETA bear will greet Prince Charles at today's visit to the Dallow Community Centre in Dallow Road, waving a sign that reads 'Save My Skin'.pETA Europe Managing Director Ingrid E. Newkirk said: 'Prince Charles is a staunch defender of the environment, so it follows that he would oppose the slaughter of black bears for something as frivolous as a ceremonial hat.
'Until he does, the PETA 'bear' will follow him, making the case that bearskin hats - not bears - should be extinct.' The bear made his debut at the prince's royal visit to the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield. Charles spoke to the bear, saying, 'I recognise you. I've seen you in America.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
