Diana death probe

Feb 27, 2006, 14:11 GMT

American spies are refusing to hand over vital evidence to detectives investigating the death of Britain's Princess Diana.

According to Britain's Daily Express newspaper Diana's private calls were bugged by US secret agents, including conversations made hours before her death.

Detectives believe transcripts of the calls could establish whether the security services had any involvement in her death.

But the inquiry - named Operation Paget - has been banned from seeing the record.

A source close to the inquiry said: 'It is our firm belief that highly sensitive material is available which could prove a lot of things.

'This satellite can pick up almost anything that's going on in the world but clearly it can take years to this kind of material into the public domain as it is highly classified.'

The Diana papers are safe from public release - even under the Freedom of Information Act.

Meanwhile, security sources in France claim that Henri Paul - the chauffer that died in the 1997 Paris car crash along with Diana and boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed - was a French agent.

One source is quoted in Britain's Daily Express newspaper as saying: 'We know he was working for the French secret service. It's and issue. We want to know where he was and what he was doing.'
