Palace intruder wanted 'tea with Queen'
Feb 23, 2006, 14:53 GMT
A man who broke into the Scottish palace of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II told security guards he wanted to have tea with the the royal.
Craig Renz had been drinking alcohol when he climbed over a fence and entered the palace after dark.
He walked free from Edinburgh Sheriff Court after being charged with entering the palace with intent to steal. Sheriff Mhairi Stephen ruled there was no evidence to prove he had any intention of stealing from the queen's Edinburgh residence on November 24 last year. Instead he told security guards that the 34-year-old wanted to have tea with the queen. Renz was found sitting in the dark after jumping over a fence, crossing a carpark, entering heavy doors, crossing a courtyard and climbing two flights of stairs lined with spears. He was found outside doors leading to a museum dedicated to Mary Queen of Scots on one side and locked apartments of the Queen Elizabeth on the other. Security guard Ian Bullock, 46, asked why he was there and he answered: 'I want to see the Queen'. Mr Bullock told him she was not in residence.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
