London - The largest-ever collection of evening gowns and personal jewellery worn by Queen Elizabeth II will go on public display to mark the British monarch's 80th birthday in April, Buckingham Palace in London said Friday.
Altogether 80 dresses, including some worn by the young Princess Elizabeth in the 1940's, will be exhibited during the normal summer opening of the Queen's state apartments in Buckingham Palace.
The outfits, carefully preserved by the Royal Collection, were worn by the Queen for both official engagements and private family events.
Among them will be a gold tissue one-shouldered gown overlaid with fine lace made for the Queen's Commonwealth Tour of 1953-54.
The selection of jewellery includes private gifts to the Queen from members of her family, as well as famous and priceless pieces.
Queen Elizabeth, who ascended to the throne after the sudden death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, is 80 on April 21.
Her 'official' birthday is traditionally celebrated with the Trooping The Colour Parade at London's Horseguards in June.
