Fighter pilot Prince Charles
Feb 9, 2006, 14:52 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles was shown the controls in the cockpit of a £50m fighter jet during a tour of the plant where it is assembled.
The Eurofighter Typhoon was set for final tests at BAE Systems' Warton Aerodrome base near in Lancashire when the Prince decided to jump in.
He took to the cockpit with Flt Lt James Jody McMeeking, an RAF fighter pilot instructor. Flt Lt McMeeking said: 'I told the Prince how fantastic the Eurofighter is. It's an awesome aircraft to fly.' He said the prince described the cockpit as 'very comfortable'. Many of the 190 staff who work on the plane downed tools to join Charles for a cup of tea during his tour.production Supervisor Ian Walker, 41, from Poulton, Lancashire, said he remembered the last time the Prince of Wales visited the plant in the 1970s.
He said: 'They were making the Tornado line then. They were nowhere near as advanced as these.' The prince saw a flight simulator in action during his four-hour visit and met senior management at the company.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
