Queen Rania's flood sympathy
Feb 8, 2006, 15:38 GMT
Jordan's Queen Rania toured flood-hit areas in the south and east of her kingdom yesterday, consoling bereaved families and listening to the community's needs.
The queen met families who had lost loved ones and livelihoods and they shared tales of their loss with the royal.
She offered the sympathy and support of King Abdullah's and spoke of their concerns for the people's well-being. The flash floods occurred on Thursday night (02.02.06) - killing nine people and resulting in the loss of shelter and livelihood, damaging water, electricity and transportation infrastructure. The government has pledged their support in compensating the residents of Aqaba and Maan - the main areas affected by the floods. In Aqaba, the queen toured the areas accompanied by the governors of Aqaba and Maan and examined damage and relief efforts on the way. She also visited Swiemreh School for Boys which is located in two separate buildings 5 minutes apart. The school covers grades four to nine and their location means schoolchildren have to carry their chairs from one building to the other. Speaking to Maan's governor, she highlighted the urgency to address the needs of the school.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
