Britain's Queen to visit Baltic states
Jan 27, 2006, 20:09 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will make their first visit to the Baltic states later this year.
During the trip - set to take place in October - the queen will visit the former Soviet states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Britain's ambassador to Latvia, Ian Bond said: 'This visit will give a tremendous boost to the profile of Britain in the region and will cement the growing links with more and more Brits coming here and many people going from the Baltics to Britain.' Although this will be the first visit from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, it is not the first time they have been to Eastern Europe and Russia. They visited Hungary in 1993, Russia in 1994, and Poland and Czech Republic in 1996. The Baltic states have received many high-level visits over the past years, most notably from President George W Bush who traveled to Latvia in 2005. The countries gained independence from Russia in 1991 and joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
