Van crashes into gates of Palace
Jan 18, 2006, 14:26 GMT
A van has crashed into the gates of the Palace of Holyroodhouse - the official Scottish residence of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.
It is the eighth time a vehicle has collided with the gates in two years and has prompted an urgent review of road safety surrounding the royal residence.
The van careered into the wrought-iron side gates just before 8am yesterday, leaving them badly damaged. The vehicle was also severely damaged but the driver unharmed. The driver was unharmed. Yesterday's ( 17.01.06) crash was the latest in a series of accidents at the gates, which are often crowded with tourists looking into the palace grounds. A terror alert was sparked last year when a man crashed a Citroen ZX into the gates, just before the G8 summit of world leaders at Gleneagles. Responsibility for maintaining the roads and ensuring safety for drivers and members of the public, including tourists, belongs to Historic Scotland. A spokesman for the organization said: 'While the gates have been damaged, they remain entirely secure. 'The stretch of road outside the palace is lit to highway standards and the situation there is monitored.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
