Prince Charles and his wife Camilla could face protests

Oct 31, 2005, 14:32 GMT

Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla are facing a horde of angry protesters when they tour Washington.

US fans of the royal's first wife, the late Princess Diana, reportedly plan to greet Camilla with the message: "This is Diana territory - go home."

A group named 'The Diana Circle' - which claims to have more than 1,000 members - is planning a demonstration against the royal tour in Washington DC, and plan to wave anti-Camilla placards and Diana posters, according to a report in Scotland's Daily Record newspaper.

One member said: "We don't want to let Camilla have a free ride. Our message is simply that this is Diana territory - get away.

"Diana did things with her public life that people can aspire to. What has Camilla done? She's barely done a day's work in her life and does very little charity work."

The woman said many would never forget Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

She said: "America loves Diana and I hope they show it by just ignoring this Camilla outing. Diana will never die. She will be alive every time Camilla steps out of the door."

The newlyweds are set to visit several American cities during their tour. While in New York, Charles and Camilla will officially open a stunning new memorial garden for the British victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In Washington they will meet with President George W. Bush and will visit an organic farmers' market.

They will also lay a wreath at a memorial to honour those who lost their lives in World War II.

Camilla, who is president of the National Osteoporosis Society in the UK, will join the heir to the British throne at a National Institute of Health seminar to increase awareness of osteoporosis.

During their trip, Charles will receive the Vincent Scully Prize for contributing to the public understanding of architecture and community planning.

A royal spokesman said the visit aims to recognise "the importance of the relationship between the two countries and their common bonds and shared traditions."

It is also hoped the tour will "support key British government objectives" and help commemorate "shared sacrifices in war and peace time."
