Princess Diana memorial fountain costs to be scrutinised
Oct 26, 2005, 1:51 GMT
The memorial fountain built to honour Britain's Princess Diana is to be scrutinised by the British governments public accounts committee.
The monument, which is located in Hyde Park, London, has been beset with problems since it was built and the cost of maintaining it has soared. The granite moat, which was designed by architect architect Kathryn Gustafson, cost around £4million, but extra work was required soon after it opened to fix several problems, such as blockages while slippery padding
areas has led to the rising total.
The committee will now question Britain's permanent secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Royal Parks chief next week to discuss the spiralling costs and the validity of keeping the fountain open.
A spokeswoman for Royal Parks said: "The fountain has been very successful since it reopened.
"We had 500,000 visitors between May and September. We've very proud of the way it's been progressing." The PAC hearing will take place on Wednesday November 2.
