Britain's Princess Anne to visit Weymouth for World Sailing Championship

Sep 7, 2005, 13:47 GMT

Britain's Princess Anne is set to visit Weymouth, UK, to watch the Basilica J24 World Sailing Championship.

The Princess Royal will attend the event at Weymouth Harbour on September 15, where she will meet all crews taking part, as well as organisers and volunteers.

Fifty four boats from 15 countries around the world - including Great Britain, the United States, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy - will take part in the annual race.

Earlier this year, Princess Anne travelled to the Isle of Man to name a new yacht for disabled sailors.

The princess, who is Queen Elizabeth's only daughter, visited the isolated island, situated in the Irish sea, on behalf of Sailability, a charity which she represents.

Charity chairman David McWilliams said the princess' involvement in the ceremony would provide a huge boost for those involved in the cause - which is an offshoot of the Royal Yachting Association.

He said at the time: "We are very excited about it. We are pleased she is coming here do to this because it is not very often you get the Princess Royal coming here to do a job like that."
