Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has told America's president she is "shocked and saddened" at the devastation caused by the Hurricane Katrina.
The hurricane, which hit the Gulf coast of the United States on Monday (29.08.05), killed dozens of people in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and caused billions of dollars worth of damage.
The monarch sent a message to President George W. Bush saying the nation's thoughts are with the families of those who have lost loved ones.
She said: "My sympathy goes to you and the people of the United States, especially to the families of those who have lost their lives."
The Queen also expressed horror at the damage and destruction caused by the high winds and flooding.
She sent her sympathies "to the injured and to all who have been affected by this terrible disaster."
Meanwhile, Spain's King Juan Carlos has also sent a telegram to President Bush expressing his and his country's condolences over the deaths.
