Britain's Queen Elizabeth fears for prize racing pigeon
Aug 26, 2005, 15:47 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth fears one of her prize racing pigeons has been eaten by a bird of prey.
The pigeon has disappeared from the monarch's Sandringham estate, and trainers now fear it may have been attacked by a sparrow-hawk.
It went missing a month ago while on a 15-mile training flight in preparation for a 238-mile race from St Malo to Malvern, which will take place in September.
Peter Bryant - manager of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association, of which the Queen is patron - told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "We have no way of knowing what has happened to the Queen's pigeon. It could have met an unpleasant end by being taken by a sparrow-hawk or flying into an overhead telephone wire - or it could simply have just got lost.
"But we have certainly not given up all hope of ever seeing it again. Some pigeons can turn up after being missing for a year."
The Queen has always had an interest in racing pigeons and the Royal Loft at Sandringham contains 160 birds.
