Prince William's girlfriend invited to dinner with Queen
Aug 15, 2005, 15:59 GMT
The girlfriend of Britain's Prince William has been invited to dinner with Queen Elizabeth II.
The invitation to dinner at Balmoral Castle will be hugely significant for Kate Middleton, 23, who many believe is ideal marriage material for the young prince.
Her presence at such an intimate gathering will fuel speculation that an engagement is imminent, but a royal aide said that the Queen's dinner invitation should not be misinterpreted.
He told Britain's Daily Sunday Express newspaper: "As Williams's grandmother, the Queen is keen to get to know his girlfriend, especially as she has seen how fond of each other they have become."
The prince met Kate while studying at St Andrew's University in 2001 and they have been an item ever since.
The smitten couple have spent have stayed many times at Tam-na-Ghar, the prince's cottage on the Balmoral estate. But this is the first time Kate has been invited inside the castle.
Meanwhile, the recent decision by William's father, Prince Charles, to let Kate share his son's apartment at Clarence House, shows they are now accepted as a serious couple.
