Security 'unprecedented' for Queen's Balmoral break
Aug 8, 2005, 15:26 GMT
Security surrounding Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has been stepped up to 'unprecedented' levels amid fears of a possible terror attack during her summer break at Balmoral.
More than 100 soldiers are being put on patrols around the 55,000 acre estate - double the usual number.
Anti-terror police have joined Royal Protection officers and RAF tornado jets will be on notice at Scottish airbases throughout the Queen's eight-week stay.
Security will be increased further still when Princes William and Harry join their grandmother later this summer.
A source revealed to Britain's The People newspaper: "Balmoral is normally a low-key break, but after the terror attacks on London it is entirely different this time.
"The amount of protection, both from the military and the police, is unprecedented."
The Queen has been made aware of the heightened alert and "fully understands" the reasons for it.
Last year, it cost £1.2 million to guard the queen at Balmoral and the price is expected to be much higher this year.
A senior aide said: "The manpower involved is huge."
