Prince William being lined up for president of the UK Football Association
Aug 1, 2005, 16:10 GMT
Britain's Prince William is being lined up to replace his uncle, the Duke of York, as president of the UK Football Association.
William, who supports Aston Villa football club, is a keen soccer fan and royal aides hope the role will offer a challenging contrast to his main career plans - a stint at a financial company in London.
Officials from Prince Charles's private office are discussing the idea with the FA, but there is reportedly some opposition from Buckingham Palace, who would prefer Prince Andrew to stay on in the job.
According to Britain's Sunday Times newspaper, William would take up his FA position before next year's World Cup.
He would be a figurehead, whose role would be to raise the international profile of the England team and to present the FA Cup.
Former sports minister Tony Banks, now Lord Banks, backed the idea, saying: "This is much better than seeing them always on polo ponies or shooting things."
