James Garner released from hospital 'soon'

Actor James Garner, who was hospitalized late last week after suffering a minor stroke, is doing well and is soon to be released, his publicist Jennifer Allen said Tuesday.

Garner, 80, was part of a 1963 classic film and cast of stars in "The Great Excape" that included Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough.

He later made his mark in television in great American TV series like "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files."

"He's still in the hospital but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When, exactly, we have not been told yet," Allen told The Associated Press.

Garner was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 as the small-town pharmacist opposite Sally Field in "Murphy's Romance."

It was his role in the mid-1970s, playing Jim Rockford, a modern-day private detective that won him an Emmy for the role in 1977.

In recent years he appeared in "8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter."
