Alan Cumming Named America's Icon Of Scotland
Apr 8, 2005, 18:13 GMT
X-men star Alan Cumming finally feels accepted by Hollywood - after being named America's Icon of Scotland for 2005 at New York's prestigious Tartan Day ceremony.
The 40-year-old actor insists he values his Scottish roots more since moving to America, and the honour from the American Scottish Foundation has made him realise how respected his fellow Scots are in the US.
He gushes, "It's unbelievable to think I've been given a title called an icon. But when you move away you feel more Scottish than when you were at home.
"Since I left Scotland, every day of my life people comment on my Scottishness. It's made me question what about me is Scottish.
"I think it's compassion, open-mindedness, passion, knowing you're the underdog, but knowing you're good enough - and a capacity for massive drinking. Talking to people, drinking and laughing - that's a good legacy for any nation."
