Mel Gibson Stalker Trial Underway
By James Wray Mar 3, 2005, 9:42 GMT
The trial of a man accused of stalking Mel Gibson is underway.
Zack Sinclair, who has a history of mental illness, is said to have started writing letters to the star in July last year.
Sinclair, 34, allegedly sent twelve letters to Gibson telling him he had been sent by god to pray with the actor. He is also said to have repeatedly avoided security and appeared at the gate of Gibson's Malibu estate, demanding the star pray with him.
Meantime Sinclair, representing himself, said in an opening statement that he may not question witnesses because the "burden of proof is going to be to heaven."
Sinclair was arrested in September and served with a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching Gibson or his family. However, the day after the order was served he was released and went straight back to Gibson's home; leading to his second arrest.
His father said his son had been moved by Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ," which seems to have sparked his interest in the star.
He faces up to 16 months in prison if found guilty.
