\'American Gladiators\' Nitro: Steroid abuse weakened his heart? Expert weighs in

TMZ reports that 'American Gladiators' star Nitro had a heart attack on Wednesday, and the former reality TV star says steroids did the damage.

Dan Clark (Nitro) experienced intense chest pains while working out at an L.A. gym and his arm went numb, one of the warning signs that you may be having a cardiac event.

Clark/Nitro was taken to urgent care center and then transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Once the athlete arrived at the hospital, Clark/Nitro underwent emergency surgery and had a blood clot in one of his arteries removed. During the procedure, doctors fitted him with a new stent.

Clark/Nitro tells TMZ that rampant steroid abuse from his days as a 'Gladiator' is most likely why this all happened.

According to Clark/Nitro, "'roids weren't viewed as taboo back in the AG heyday ... it was just part of the culture."

Dr. Damon Raskin, a double board certified internist and men's health specialist offered his opinion on steroids, which can play havoc with major organs, to Monsters and Critics.

"This is a prime example of how anabolic steroid abuse can lead to major medical complications even years after the abuse stops. These drugs can cause weakening of the heart muscle which over time can lead to heart failure and cardiac arrest. Because this effect may be irreversible, this should serve as a strong warning for young people not to get started with steroids in the first place," says Dr. Raskin.
