Pope Francis, TIME's person of the year

Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church is TIME's choice for Person of the Year.

Eschewing the velvet mafia and bringing a behemoth back to its roots, the new Pope expresses humility from the most exalted throne on earth with little fanfare.

Pope Francis is clearly the people's pope, and does not celebrate wealth and brings comfort to the poor and most importantly embraces modernity, globalization, the elevated role of women, the nature of marriage and more real time issues to everyday Catholics.

The Catholic Church is one of the oldest, largest and richest institutions on earth, but has been weakened worldwide by scandal, corruption, a shortage of priests and a Holy Sea that is dismayed by these challenges.

Vatican bureaucrats and clergy stand accused of pedophilia, infighting, blackmail and an obsession with “small-minded rules,” as Francis has said publicly.

And yet in less than a year, Pope Francis has done away with the pomp and even dressed down a spendthift German Archbishop, and reaches out to people far and wide in acts of ompassion and kindness.

Quite simply, as a Catholic who has been around a while, this Pope Francis deserves TIME’s 2013 Person of the Year honor.
