Ryan Gosling thinks modern men are confused about their role in the world - and Hollywood is party to blame.

The 'Gangster Squad' star thinks it's never been harder to be a man because guys aren't sure what society expects of them.

He thinks lots of stereotypes and ideals that men try and live up to are perpetuated by the movie industry.

In an interview with Shortlist magazine, he said: 'I feel like there's a sense of confusion, as to what men want from each other, what's expected of them and what they expect of each other.

'I feel like Hollywood is responsible for a lot of the stereotypes, so to a certain degree I'm in the belly of the beast.

'In some ways it makes it easier to see it, because you're in the factory, seeing how those archetypes are created.'

The 32-year-old actor knows public perception can be distorted, particularly after a video recorded on a phone showed him helping to break up a fight in New York last summer.

While Ryan claimed he didn't panic after getting involved, he admitted it was probably more impressive watching the footage - and he'd have reconsidered if the scrap was between much larger men.

He explained: '[I didn't really panic], but I think in retrospect, from a blurry cellphone perspective, from far away, it looked more interesting than it was.

'In reality, one guy was pretty old and the other guy was pretty sad and crazy.

'And there were lots of people around. I wasn't the only one involved. There were a couple of guys that were actively trying to help.'
