McFly star Dougie Poynter attempted suicide

Dougie Poynter attempted suicide last February after becoming addicted to drink and drugs.

The McFly bass guitarist revealed he tried to kill himself in a fume-filled car - as he struggled to cope with depression and his addictions - in an emotional pre-recorded interview to promote his band's new autobiography 'Unsaid Things... Our Story' on the popular Channel 4 series 'Alan Carr: Chatty Man'.

Referring to band's tell-all - which hits shelves today (11.10.12), Alan asked: 'Listen, I have got to say, it got really dark, about you trying to kill yourself?'

The 24-year-old 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' winner replied: 'Yeah' and admitted he feels much better since going to rehab and writing about his secret struggles.

He said: 'It's always good to reflect on that sort of stuff. I'm in a really, really good place now. It is quite easy to forget.

'It's quite therapeutic to go back, quite scary and a bit of an eye opener into how dark it can get if you take your foot off the gas and stop looking after yourself.'

A close friend of the singer also told the Daily Mirror: 'We were all devastated.

'His drinking was out of control and he thought ending it all was the easy and perhaps only option available to him.'

The rocker spent more than a month in the Priory rehabilitation centre and successfully completed his treatment before going on to win the 11th series of the ITV reality TV show.

Dougie's confession had the full support of his bandmates, who were also interviewed for tomorrow night's (12.10.12) episode of 'Alan Carr: Chatty Man'.

Tom Fletcher said: 'We are all in good places now. Dougie has sorted himself out and I am married.'
