Angelina Jolie was honoured with the Stanley Kramer Award at the Producer Guild Awards on Saturday night for her work on the film In the Land of Blood and Honey.
Tombraider star Jolie directed the film which was set during the Bosnian War. The film tells the story of a forbidden relationship between a soldier and a Bosnian woman, who is a prisoner in the camp he oversees.
36-year-old Jolie told the LA Times “What I hope is that our film helps people not forget the past.”
“I want people to see what these people have gone through and that they are able to tell their story through the bravery. The story matters,” explained Jolie.
Jolie said that she would give up acting to continue directing in a heartbeat. “I would love to not be in front of a camera,” she said.
Karen Sharpe Kramer, the widow of Stanley Kramer, said that Jolie won “hands-down’ for her film.
Kramer explained that the Stanley Kramer award was created to honour socially conscious filmmaking.
“I think women are better directors of violence for film,” Kramer said.
“Genocide continues throughout the world, and if a film like this can keep being seen, we can help bring an end to the violence,” she added.
Jolie's directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, saw a limited release in the USA on the 23rd December 2011.
