Kelly Clarkson has been reportedly chosen to sing the National Anthem at the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis on the 5th of February.
A source told the news to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The NFL are not set to release the identity of the anthem singer until later this month.
29-year-old Clarkson rose to fame after winning singing contest American Idol in 2002.
The Since U Been Gone singer went on to release five albums. The singles A Moment Like This and My Life Would Suck Without You broke the record for the biggest leap to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Over the past decade, Clarkson has won two Grammy Awards and picked up three MTV Video Music Awards. She also won a Women’s World Award and four American Music Awards.
Clarkson has just released the single What Doesn’t Kill You from her fifth album Stronger.
Christina Aguilera performed the Super Bowl anthem last year and sang the wrong lyrics. She later posted a statement saying “I got so lost in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of it’s anthem still came through.”
The NFL announced in December that Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl’s half time.
Other previous National Anthem singers for the Super Bowl include Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond and Whitney Houston.
