Iconic pop star Morrissey has been named PETA UK's Person of the Year.

Throughout 2011 the Hang The D.J. singer promoted the organisation's message by having his band wear pro-animal shirts that highlighted animal abuse in the fur, fast food and other industries.

PETA also had a stall at each of Morrissey's shows, where concertgoers could learn more about some of the abuses taking place.

Speaking to PETA US Morrissey said, "Please don't kill anything. These are pathetically basic words but get through your life without … killing animals and dragging animals down … it's not anything that anybody really needs. We were all raised with that concept that animals are there to be used, but they're not. It's just the dreadful industries that do it."

Morrissey has been a long-standing and vocal supporter of animal rights.

According to NME the singer will publish his autobiography in December 2012.
