MTV has named Katy Perry as artist of the year.
The 27-year-old singer had stiff competition as she went up against artists Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber, Adele, Rihanna, Beyonce, Drake, The Throne and Lady Gaga for the title.
The ‘I Kissed a Girl’ singer has followed in Michael Jackson’s footsteps by achieving five number one hits off the same album. The songs ‘Teenage Dream,’ ‘California Gurls.’ ‘ET,’ ‘Firework’ and ‘Last Friday Night’ all originated off Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ album.
The pop star has released her sixth song from the album called ‘The One that Got Away.’ If the song reaches number one, Perry will have broken Michael Jackson’s record for his ‘Bad’ album.
Perry is married to British comedian Russell Brand who she started dating after the 2009 MTV video music awards. The couple married on October 23rd 2010 in India.
’Barbara Walters’ Most Fascinating People of 2011’ aired on Wednesday night on the ABC, and Perry appears on the show after making it onto Walters’ top 10 people list.
