Liz Taylor's jewellery beats estimates at auction
Dec 14, 2011, 4:23 GMT
New York - The jewellery of Hollywood legend Liz Taylor has fetched record prices in an auction at Christie's in New York.
A necklace of rubies and diamonds with a pearl that was once part of the Spanish crown jewels fetched 10.5 million dollars, well above the pre-auction estimate of 2 million to 3 million dollars.
Experts said the price was one of the highest ever paid for a comparable piece.
A Bulgari diamond and emerald necklace, given to Taylor by Richard Burton for their 1964 wedding, fetched 5.4 million dollars. Christie's had estimated its price at 1 million to 1.5 million dollars.
A diamond and sapphire ring given to the actress by singer Michael Jackson went for 600,000 dollars.
The jewellery was exhibited in Moscow, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, Geneva, Paris and Hong Kong before it was sold.
The auction late Tuesday was the start and high point of a four-day sale of jewellery, clothes and art formerly belonging to the star of Cleopatra, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The eight-time married Taylor died on March 23 at 79.
