Los Angeles - Hollywood legend Robert Redford has added his voice to those opposing a huge mine planned near the world's most prolific salmon run in Alaska.
The superstar put out a full page ad in the New York Times and wrote an article in the Huffington Post Thursday in which he warned of an 'environmental tragedy' if the planned Pebble Mine was given the green light.
Redford said that an international consortium led by Rio Tinto and Anglo-American plan to build a massive three-kilometre mine in the untouched Bristol Bay area of Alaska that would harvest gold and copper. Situated in an active earthquake zone, the mine would create 10 billion tons of waste to be held back by earthen barriers higher than China's Three Gorges Dam.
Redford called on the public to canvass Rio Tinto and Anglo- American to cancel the plan, which he called a 'disaster in the making.'
