Penthouse founder Bob Guccione dies
Oct 21, 2010, 11:45 GMT
Berlin - Bob Guccione, founder of the US magazine Penthouse, has died aged 79 after a long battle with cancer, US media quoted his family as saying.
Guccione died on Wednesday at a hospital in Plano, Texas.
Born in New York, Guccione launched Penthouse in London in 1965 and brought out the first edition in the United States four years later as a rival to the less explicit Playboy.
One of its best-selling issues featured nude photographs of reigning Miss America Vanessa Williams in 1984.
At one time Guccione, who was also editor-in-chief of the magazine, was one of America's richest men.
But the advance of internet pornography led to dwindling sales and Guccione was forced to relinquish ownership of the magazine in 2004.
Guccione was married three times and had five children.
