Pete Doherty arrested on drugs charge

Mar 22, 2010, 10:31 GMT

Pete Doherty has been arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs to dead heiress Robin Whitehead.

The 31-year-old Babyshambles rocker attended a police station voluntarily to face the charges on Friday (19.03.10).

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "A 31-year-old man was arrested on March 19 on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs. He was bailed to return on a date in April pending further inquiries."

Goldsmith heiress Whitehead - the 27-year-old granddaughter of Teddy Goldsmith, the founder of The Ecologist magazine - had been working on a documentary about Doherty before she died of a suspected overdose in an east London flat on January 24.

Doherty previously admitted he visited the property the day before and the day after she died but claimed he stayed at his home in Wiltshire in between those times.

A source said: "Pete's adamant he played no part in Robin's death. He is still very distressed."

Video footage from Whitehead's camera showed Doherty, 31, taking crack at the property - which was rented by Gill Samworth, 53 - along with his musician friend Peter 'Wolfman' Wolfe, 41, who found the body.

Samworth and Wolfe have both since been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice as they initially claimed that Whitehead took no illegal substances before her death.

Wolfe later changed his story and admitted she choked on her own vomit after taking Valium and drinking alcohol.

Another friend, musician Alan Wass was also arrested last Tuesday (16.03.10) on suspicion of supplying drugs.

All four were given police bail and will return to court in April.

Doherty - who was most recently charged with heroin possession in December - has 21 previous drug offences and six previous motoring convictions.
