Michael Douglas' son refused bail
Feb 26, 2010, 9:30 GMT
Michael Douglas' son was denied bail yesterday (25.02.10).
Cameron Douglas , 31 - who pleaded guilty in January to possession and dealing methamphetamine and cocaine while in a Manhattan hotel last July - appeared at Manhattan Federal Court to ask to be released from prison and placed under house arrest and receive outpatient addiction treatment, but had his request turned down.
Judge Richard Berman told the court that he didn't think Cameron could be trusted to stay off heroin while on house arrest.
He said: "His living at home is unlikely to prove a powerful deterrent to relapse."
The 'Wall Street' actor did not attend the hearing for his son, but the 'It Runs In The Family' star briefly spoke to his mother Diandra - Michael's first wife - before being taken back to jail.
According to court documents, Cameron's defence lawyers had argued that he should have been given $1 million bail so he could get intensive treatment for heroin addiction which wasn't available behind bars.
Cameron told the judge at an earlier hearing that he had first been approached to deal drugs in 2006, after which he "began supplying on a regular basis".
His defence lawyer Nicholas M. DeFeis previously said Cameron's problems had stemmed from "a very dysfunctional upbringing" and claimed he "didn't benefit from his celebrity".
Cameron will be sentenced on April 14.
