Cheryl Cole 'heartbroken' over Haiti

Feb 1, 2010, 13:16 GMT

Cheryl Cole was "heartbroken" over the plight of the Haiti earthquake victims.

The 'Fight for This Love' singer was overjoyed when Simon Cowell approached her to appear on his Helping Haiti charity single - a cover version of R.E.M.'s classic hit 'Everybody Hurts' - because she had been desperate to do something to help the disaster-stricken Caribbean nation.

Cheryl - who is joined on the record by a host of music stars, including Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey and Jon Bon Jovi - said: "Simon asked me and I didn't hesitate in saying yes.

"First and foremost, the cause was what struck me as the most important part. The fact it is the most amazing line-up and such a legendary song makes it more special.

"I think the plight of Haiti is so important. To see anyone suffer so much and those heart-breaking images are enough to move anyone to want to help."

Alexandra Burke also features on the single and admits she wasn't surprised when Simon announced he was embarking on the project.

She said: "I agreed in a beat. Simon has a big heart and he always steps up when it matters.

"Recording was amazing - I will never forget it. It was an incredibly emotional feeling."

The recording of the single was completed on Saturday night (30.01.10) and it is released on Sunday (07.02.10).

Leona Lewis - another of the 21 artists who feature on the single - has urged fans to buy the track when it is released.

She told Britain's Hello! magazine: "Haiti has really affected me. With all my heart, I urge you to help and support Haiti."
